Huge Ramsden Firction Machine, c. 1865

 
In 1776, an English optician, Jesse Ramsden, developed a machine capable of producing an electric discharge by friction. This electrostatic glass-top machine produces electrical power from mechanical power under high voltage (tens and hundreds of thousands of volts) and low intensity (milliamps or less).
