Warren's open mouth in turned boxwood

 
Invented by John Warren in the USA. Used to loosen the jaws of unconscious patients (asphyxiates, drowning, epilepsy.) and was used, generally, to introduce into the mouth a breathing apparatus.
John Warren (1753-1815) was a Continental Army surgeon during the American Revolutionary War, founder of the Harvard Medical School.
